At the 2022 SEA Games in Hanoi, he became the first Singaporean to win a SEA Games medal in the 400m hurdles since 1969. At the 2025 SEA Games in Bangkok, he won Singapore's first gold in the event in 60 years.
Graduated in 2022 with Honours in Sport Management, Calvin’s main challenge then was to find a company that is willing to accommodate his training schedule as well as being away from work for extended period of times for overseas competition and training camp.
Calvin signed up for the spexBusiness networking in late 2022 and met several spexBusiness partners during the session. He subsequently reached out to Octagon and was offered the Graduate Trainee opportunity.

My experience working at Octagon has been great. From the time I joined Octagon as a graduate trainee, everyone has been very friendly and supportive of my sporting career. I was able to build my career, develop skills and progress in the corporate world while still being able to pursue my sport. Over the past year, I’ve gone from assisting my superior in administrative works on the backend to being able to front conversations with clients.”— Calvin Quek
Calvin shared that the spexBusiness team “Bernard and Apple have been very helpful the whole process. They made me welcome at the networking session and took the initiative to catch up with me post session on how things went, reminding me to follow up with the companies that I’m interested in finding out more about the job opportunities. Even now, they would still catch up with me to see how I’m doing and if everything is going well.”
Octagon allowed Calvin to be able to get off work a bit earlier to go for his training and gave him additional leave off work to go for overseas training camp and competition throughout the year.
Octagon is proud to support emerging sporting talent through the spexBusiness Program, providing opportunities to work within the broader sport industry sector and gain exposure to potential future career opportunities whilst simultaneously enabling their continued pursuit as a professional athlete.”— Joanne Warnes, Managing Director, Octagon Singapore
